- “Abortion on demand.” What other way does one get an abortion? By sending an engraved invitation? Do they want “an abortion only if you ask really, really nicely and are white enough/nice enough”? I “demand” an abortion the same way I demand access to an oncologist if I think I have cancer….
something tells me you’ve never had one. i understand that there are disclaimers throughout this, but there’s judgment of those who feel that abortion is a difficult thing but still believe that women should have the right to choose inherent in what you say here. (coming from perhaps the liberalest of all liberal pro-choice people in existence, btw)
there is no “supposed to” or “should” when it comes to what people who ascribe to a certain viewpoint believe; that’s sort of like stereotyping individuals because they have the label of “pro-choice.” there are significant variations among those who are pro-choice — some may think the way you think, and some may respect the right of other women to do something they never would or did and regret or did and didn’t regret or did and found difficult or whatever.
maybe it is true, though, that to appease pro-lifers, or to prove that pro-choice people aren’t pro-death, that they qualify their pro-choice beliefs by trying to connect with pro-lifers on the angle that abortion is not the greatest and promoting personal freedoms and individual rights instead, as a way to try to win the argument, because they know using abortion qua abortion as a talking point will never work.
